Tackling the 997 Turbo's Common Issues: Coolant Pipes and Camshaft Cones

Another big job is off the list! Jack’s 997 Turbo just had both infamous Mezger engine issues addressed, ensuring this iconic car is ready for worry-free driving. Here’s a breakdown of the work we performed.

The Infamous Coolant Pipe Failure

One of the most common issues with the Mezger engine is coolant pipe failure. While some debate whether pinning or welding is the better fix, our approach prioritizes permanence and reliability. Pinning is often seen as an easier solution because it avoids the need to take apart the engine or deal with cleaning the porous cast aluminum for welding. However, it’s not a permanent fix, and leaks can still occur down the line.

At our shop, we exclusively offer the welding solution. This involves replacing the old pipes with billet replacements, welding them securely into place to ensure they will never leak again. After welding, the engine’s cooling system is thoroughly pressure-checked to confirm the integrity of the repair. Additionally, we replaced all associated components, including:

  • Gaskets and O-rings

  • Turbo water return lines

  • Water hoses

  • Auxiliary water pump

This comprehensive approach guarantees long-term peace of mind.

Fixing the Camshaft Cone Failure

The second Mezger issue we addressed is the camshaft cone failure. The typical dealer recommendation is to replace both intake camshafts, but we offer a smarter and more cost-effective solution. By drilling the camshaft and installing a roll pin, we permanently resolve this issue. This service is highly recommended whenever the engine is out, as it’s the best time to tackle this potential weak point.

Major Service: A Fresh Start

While the engine was out, we also performed a major service to ensure Jack’s 997 Turbo is in peak condition. This included:

  • NGK spark plugs for efficient combustion

  • Upgraded BERU coil packs for improved ignition reliability

  • Wide-band O2 sensors to optimize air-fuel ratios

  • A BMC air filter for better airflow

  • Replacement of all fluids to keep the car running smoothly

Final Results

With these two major Mezger issues resolved and the additional service performed, Jack now has the peace of mind to enjoy his 997 Turbo to the fullest. Whether on the road or the track, this car is ready to deliver reliable performance without the fear of sudden failures.
